Principles of Copper Electrolysis
Through electrolysis of an electrolyte solution, crude copper is used as the anode, pure copper is used as the cathode, and a solution containing copper ions is used as the electrolyte. Copper dissolves from the anode and precipitates at the cathode. Impurities in crude copper do not dissolve, and inactive impurities become anode mud and settle at the bottom of the electrolytic cell. Although active impurities dissolve at the anode, they cannot precipitate at the cathode. So high purity copper can be obtained through electrolytic cathode.
The copper electrolytic refining process was first applied in industry in 1896, with a history of 140 years. During this period, although the basic principles remained unchanged, significant progress was made in terms of technical equipment level, production scale, copper quality, and energy consumption reduction.
